Two days after we get back to Sherwood, Xavier comes into my office as Iâm adding yet another sticky note to the wall. He looks at the pictures Iâve taken down and set on the table next to a wall clock, then back at the assortment of notes.
âI like what youâve done with the place,â he starts. âYou have a unique decorative touch.â
âThanks,â I say, stepping back and looking over the effect of the new note.
âGregâs case?â he asks, stepping up beside me to get the same perspective of how the bright pieces of paper flow across the wall.
âYeah,â I say, tilting my head to the side. âIt was getting too complicated to just look at his file and try to work out all the little off-shoots and details. I need to find out how it all pieces together, and how it links to the other cases. Because I know it does.â
âThrough the Dragon,â Xavier says.
âMmmm-hmmm,â I nod. âItâs too much of a coincidence that each one of these situations has Dragon at least on the periphery.â I touch the tip of my pen to different notes in the web laid out on the wall. âAnd as we both knowâ¦â
âThereâs no such thing as a coincidence,â Xavier completes the sentence for me.
âAnd if weâre wrong about that, there would have to be a ton of them happening right in this cluster. Which seems unlikely.â
Xavier nods slowly as he surveys the web. âGreg has a connection to you, to the Dragon during the early investigation, to Jonah, and to Lydia.â
âYes,â I say.
âLydia also got involved in Lakynâs case, which connects both of you to the Order and to Millie.â
âYes.â
âThe Order is connected to Millie through her brother, to you through your involvement with them and your family connection, and to the Dragon.â
âYes,â I repeat, feeling my spine getting tenser the further he goes.
âMillie is connected to her brother in the Order and to Gabriel.â
He hesitates there, not finishing the entire thought. I donât know if I will ever fully understand what happened between him and Millie, or why she made such an intense impact on him. He doesnât talk about her. It doesnât seem like he wants to pretend she never happened in his life. Or that the intensity is fading and heâs forgetting how much she affected him.
Instead, itâs like heâs holding her close and doesnât want to share her. She is still precious to him and the rest of us donât have to understand that.
But it often stops him from talking about her death. He doesnât want to mention her murder or the horrific aftermath. I will never forget watching him in the moments after she fell to the ground, blood spilling out onto the pavement. He held her close then, too. He cradled her against him and shielded her in her last moments, then lied down beside her until he had to be pulled away.
I donât know what he saw when he saw her. I likely never will.
