Two days after we get back to Sherwood, Xavier comes into my office as I’m adding yet another sticky note to the wall. He looks at the pictures I’ve taken down and set on the table next to a wall clock, then back at the assortment of notes.

“I like what you’ve done with the place,” he starts. “You have a unique decorative touch.”

“Thanks,” I say, stepping back and looking over the effect of the new note.

“Greg’s case?” he asks, stepping up beside me to get the same perspective of how the bright pieces of paper flow across the wall.

“Yeah,” I say, tilting my head to the side. “It was getting too complicated to just look at his file and try to work out all the little off-shoots and details. I need to find out how it all pieces together, and how it links to the other cases. Because I know it does.”

“Through the Dragon,” Xavier says.

“Mmmm-hmmm,” I nod. “It’s too much of a coincidence that each one of these situations has Dragon at least on the periphery.” I touch the tip of my pen to different notes in the web laid out on the wall. “And as we both know…”

“There’s no such thing as a coincidence,” Xavier completes the sentence for me.

“And if we’re wrong about that, there would have to be a ton of them happening right in this cluster. Which seems unlikely.”

Xavier nods slowly as he surveys the web. “Greg has a connection to you, to the Dragon during the early investigation, to Jonah, and to Lydia.”

“Yes,” I say.

“Lydia also got involved in Lakyn’s case, which connects both of you to the Order and to Millie.”

“Yes.”

“The Order is connected to Millie through her brother, to you through your involvement with them and your family connection, and to the Dragon.”

“Yes,” I repeat, feeling my spine getting tenser the further he goes.

“Millie is connected to her brother in the Order and to Gabriel.”

He hesitates there, not finishing the entire thought. I don’t know if I will ever fully understand what happened between him and Millie, or why she made such an intense impact on him. He doesn’t talk about her. It doesn’t seem like he wants to pretend she never happened in his life. Or that the intensity is fading and he’s forgetting how much she affected him.

Instead, it’s like he’s holding her close and doesn’t want to share her. She is still precious to him and the rest of us don’t have to understand that.

But it often stops him from talking about her death. He doesn’t want to mention her murder or the horrific aftermath. I will never forget watching him in the moments after she fell to the ground, blood spilling out onto the pavement. He held her close then, too. He cradled her against him and shielded her in her last moments, then lied down beside her until he had to be pulled away.

I don’t know what he saw when he saw her. I likely never will.
